King’s, Trinity and St John’s charge in the visitor season, and between them they account for most of what people believe about visiting Cambridge. They are three colleges out of thirty-one. This is the rest of it.
The claim
Cambridge has a reputation for charging at the gate, and for King’s, Trinity and St John’s in the visitor season that is fair. It is also the smallest part of the city. Most colleges admit visitors for nothing — you report to a Porters’ Lodge and walk in — and the Fitzwilliam, one of the great collections outside London, charges nothing at all.

Everything free
One of the great collections outside London — antiquities, armour, Rembrandt and Monet — in a building that announces itself before you are through the gate. Charges may apply to selected activities; the collection itself is the free part.

The grounds and the chapel — Wren’s first completed building — cost nothing. Staircases and interiors are private, so this is a walk through courts and gardens rather than a tour.

The oldest college in Cambridge, and open to the public for much of the year with nothing to pay. Report to the Porters’ Lodge on Trumpington Street first.

A quiet set of courts a minute from the market, free to walk for most of the year. Report to the Porters’ Lodge on arrival.

Check in at the Porters’ Lodge and walk the grounds for nothing, right down to the river. The buildings are closed to visitors, so this is the riverbank and the courts, not the interiors.

One of the finest college gardens in the city, free on most days of the year, in red-brick Queen Anne revival rather than medieval stone. Groups are limited to six without prior arrangement.

Visitors are welcome free of charge; report to the Porters’ Lodge on Grange Road. Victorian Gothic done seriously, and almost never busy.

The youngest college in Cambridge and the least like the others: a brick fortress with a stream and a woodland garden inside it. Free, and a complete change of register from the medieval centre.

Twentieth-century Cambridge in concrete and brick, with a serious collection of modern sculpture in the grounds. The college asks that you telephone the Porters’ Lodge before planning a trip.

Not the museum of the same name. The college describes itself as always open to visitors, with entry through the Porters’ Lodge on Storey’s Way — the most straightforward free welcome in Cambridge.

A day that costs nothing
Deliberately not free
King’s College Chapel, Trinity’s courts, St John’s in the summer season, punting and the Botanic Garden all charge. None of them is necessary to a good day here, and the free version of Cambridge is not a lesser one.
If you spend on exactly one thing, spend it on King’s College Chapel — it is the interior the free day genuinely lacks, and no amount of walking substitutes for standing under that vault.
The verdict
A free Cambridge day is a college day. Nine colleges will let you walk in for nothing, the Fitzwilliam charges nothing at all, and the only thing the free version genuinely lacks is King’s College Chapel.
