Rail

Train

Cambridge station is south-east of the centre. The walk in takes around twenty-five minutes and needs no planning.

Cambridge railway station

Cambridge’s station sits south-east of the centre. No central sight is more than about twenty-five minutes from it on foot, and the walk in along Hills Road and Regent Street is a reasonable introduction to the city.

Best for
Almost every visit. The centre is a walk away and the colleges follow on from it.
Onward
Walk north-west into the centre, or take the Universal (U) bus, which links the station with the city and West Cambridge.

Bus

Bus and coach

Drummer Street is the central bus station, inside the ring of colleges and a few minutes from King’s Parade.

City centre

Drummer Street bus station

The central bus station, a couple of minutes from Christ’s Pieces and inside the ring of colleges. Most services into the centre call here.

Best for
Coaches, and the Park & Ride services once they reach the centre.
Onward
Everything in the historic centre is on foot from here — King’s Parade is about five minutes west.

Local buses

Local services radiate from the centre, including the Universal (U) route linking the railway station, the city and West Cambridge. The guided busway runs north towards St Ives. Most visitors need a bus only for the Park & Ride or a trip out of the centre — the historic core is flat, compact and largely walkable.

P&R

Park & Ride

Five sites intercept the main approaches. Pick the one on the road you are arriving by, then continue in by bus — central parking is limited and the centre is largely pedestrianised.

West

Madingley Road Park & Ride

The western interceptor, and the closest of the five to the colleges once you are on the bus.

Best for
Arriving from the west — the M11 and the A428.
Onward
Buses run up to every ten minutes to the city centre, Bridge Street and Jesus College.

South

Trumpington Park & Ride

The southern interceptor, and the one whose bus route passes closest to the museums.

Best for
Arriving from the south on the M11 or the A10.
Onward
Buses run up to every ten minutes to the city centre, the Botanic Garden and the Fitzwilliam Museum.

South-east

Babraham Road Park & Ride

The south-eastern interceptor. Its buses also serve the hospital and the railway station, which none of the others do.

Best for
Arriving from the south-east on the A11, and for Addenbrooke’s.
Onward
Buses run up to every twelve minutes to the city centre, Addenbrooke’s Hospital and the railway station.

East

Newmarket Road Park & Ride

The eastern interceptor, on the retail side of the city rather than the college side.

Best for
Arriving from the east on the A14 or the A1303.
Onward
Buses run up to every ten minutes to the city centre and the Grafton Centre.

North

Milton Road Park & Ride

The northern interceptor, and the furthest out of the five.

Best for
Arriving from the north on the A14.
Onward
Buses run up to every fifteen minutes to the city centre, passing Jesus Green and Midsummer Common.
