    Independent cafes, restaurants and bars, the historic Phoenix Picturehouse cinema, canal-side walks and the Oxford University Press building; an easy, atmospheric stroll just northwest of the centre.

    The best concentration of world cuisine, independent shops, music venues, nightlife and street life in Oxford; home to the annual Cowley Road Carnival.

    Summertown

    Good delis, cafes, restaurants and everyday shops along Banbury Road; a pleasant, quieter base north of the centre.

    The quirky 'Headington Shark' house is a photo stop; also the practical district for the John Radcliffe Hospital and Brookes, and the gateway to South Park and Shotover.

    Osney Island

    Pretty riverside lanes, weirs and lock, just minutes from the railway station; a peaceful pocket of water on the western edge of the core.

    Iffley (village and lock)

    The 12th-century church of St Mary the Virgin and the scenic Iffley Lock on the Thames make a classic riverside walk from the centre; the towpath here is prime rowing territory.
