Living culture in the heart of Narrm.
Free galleries and collections celebrating Aboriginal Victoria, with an optional First Peoples guided walk from Federation Square.
Make time at Federation Square for the living cultures of Aboriginal Victoria. Koorie Heritage Trust is an Aboriginal owned and managed organisation focused on the First Peoples of south-eastern Australia. Its free exhibitions and collections place contemporary artists alongside cultural heritage, offering a substantial city visit that can sit beside ACMI or NGV Australia without needing a full day.
Begin at the Wominjeka Desk on the ground floor, known as Level 1. Temporary exhibitions are on Level 2, with permanent collection displays and the Moogji Lounge on Level 3. Let the exhibition labels and the artists’ own voices guide your visit; programmes change throughout the year. The Trust welcomes visitors of all backgrounds. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander visitors should be aware that some displays and media can include the names, voices or images of people who have died.
For a guided outdoor experience, book the Birrarung Wilam public walk separately. A First Peoples Aboriginal guide leads the approximately one-hour walk from the Birrarung Building toward the river, exploring Country and the Birrarung Wilam installations. The normal programme is Monday–Friday at 13:00 for individuals and small groups of up to 10. Current adult tickets start at AUD 40, with student and concession tickets from AUD 20; future-date sessions depend on the calendar. Paid walks and workshops are additional to free gallery entry.
The Trust occupies all three levels of the Birrarung Building, previously called the Yarra Building. Head to the main entrance within Federation Square and ask the Wominjeka team for directions or lift assistance. Passenger lifts reach Levels 2 and 3 from Level 1 or the building’s east-side lift entrance, and accessible bathrooms are available on every level. Allow 60–90 minutes for the galleries and add an hour if you have booked the walk. Discuss mobility or access requirements when booking the outdoor tour; indoor lift access does not describe the walking route.
