01 / The experience
Abbotsford Convent.
Heritage buildings, garden lawns and an active arts precinct beside the Yarra, with space for a slower Abbotsford afternoon.
Give Abbotsford Convent a relaxed half-day place in your Melbourne plans. The former convent is now an arts and cultural precinct, with heritage buildings, garden lawns, cafés and creative workspaces. Walk the grounds, visit an open gallery or studio, and leave time to sit outdoors rather than treating it as a quick photo stop.
The grounds are free to enter and open every day, but the individual galleries, cafés and studios keep their own hours. Visit only studios marked open to the public. A workshop, performance or guided tour is a separate booking; free grounds access does not include every activity inside the buildings. The neighbouring Collingwood Children’s Farm is also a separate attraction.
The setting is beautiful, but its history deserves attention. The former institutional buildings and Magdalen Laundries preserve difficult stories of the women and girls who lived and worked here. The Convent’s self-guided history walk includes former residents’ voices; make space for that history alongside the gardens and present-day arts.
Arrive through St Heliers Street and explore the precinct on foot. The Capital City Trail passes nearby, so you can extend the outing with a riverside walk when weather and daylight suit. Keep two hours for the precinct itself, with more time for lunch or a booked event. In hot weather, plan outdoor walking earlier and take water.
