Founded 1555. Founded by Sir Thomas Pope, a Tudor civil servant, on the site of the medieval Benedictine Durham College dissolved at the Reformation.
Known for its late-17th-century chapel, an early Oxford essay in the classical style with Grinling Gibbons-school carving, set among unusually broad lawns and gardens behind ornate wrought-iron gates and railings facing Broad Street.
