Pod 39
A Murray Hill hotel with compact private-bathroom pods, social spaces and a practical Grand Central connection.
01 / The stay
Compact rooms and Midtown East exploring
Compact rooms and a compulsory facility fee; morning coffee and tea are not a full breakfast, and the rooftop is a shared venue.
Pod 39 puts its character into the shared spaces as much as the bedrooms. Behind the older Murray Hill façade are a lively lobby and the Playroom Lounge, where board games, places to work and a fireplace give you somewhere to spend time beyond the room. It suits visitors who plan to use New York extensively and want a smaller Manhattan base with some personality.
The accommodation is deliberately compact. For a solo traveller, that can be a sensible exchange for the location; for two people with large cases, it is a more consequential choice. The useful distinction is between having somewhere comfortable to sleep and wanting the bedroom itself to be a substantial part of the holiday. The separate-bed and connected family options are explained in the room details, rather than assumed from the headline price.
Arthur & Sons supplies an Italian dining option at the property, while Artie’s Backroom adds another reason to come back for a drink or a bite on a city evening. The rooftop and lounge appeal should be treated as public-space experiences, not as a view promised from an ordinary bedroom. Restaurant and bar opening hours remain separate from hotel reception.
Murray Hill works well for a trip that includes Grand Central, Midtown and time further afield. The station provides connections across the city, but it is also an outing in its own right; Bryant Park offers a different stop to the west. Staying here gives you a Manhattan evening around the city portion of the trip, instead of returning to Queens every night.
The compromise is space, together with a compulsory nightly facility fee that needs to sit alongside the room price in a comparison. Breakfast is another distinction: the fee includes morning coffee and tea, rather than a full breakfast buffet. Pod 39 can work very well for a light-packing city stay, but the apparent saving should be judged against the whole rate and the layout you actually want.
For tennis, walk to Grand Central for the 7. The advantage is the combination of a Midtown East base and a through subway journey to Mets–Willets Point; the trade-off is a longer return across Queens than from a Flushing hotel. Keep a rooftop or restaurant booking on a separate evening from a match with an uncertain finish.
