MoMA — Midtown
Modern and contemporary art, design and film at the Midtown museum.
01 / The experience
Modern art with room for more than the famous painting.
Modern and contemporary art, design and film at the Midtown museum.
MoMA is a strong choice when the story you want is how modern artists changed the way pictures, objects and images could work. Painting sits within a wider conversation that includes sculpture, photography, film, architecture and design. A visit can begin with a recognisable work and become more interesting as the surrounding galleries reveal the experiments happening around it.
Van Gogh’s The Starry Night is one of the collection’s defining works. Seen in person, the handling of the sky and the contrast between restless marks and the village below give it more to offer than the familiar reproduced image. Make a work like this an anchor if it is on view, then allow time for the neighbouring rooms rather than treating the museum as a queue for one picture. Collection displays rotate, so use the day’s map to locate the works that matter to you.
Dalí’s The Persistence of Memory offers a different kind of invention. Its soft watches and dream landscape occupy a surprisingly small painting, making a useful contrast with the way the image circulates in reproductions. Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon is another defining collection work. Choose a few such anchors when they are on view, then follow the changing displays around them to see more than a sequence of famous names.
The museum’s own collection routes connect Floors 5, 4 and 2. That gives a first visit a useful shape: start with the earlier modern works, follow a selected part of the later collection, then decide whether a contemporary presentation or another medium is the stronger finish. The point is to see relationships between artists and periods, not to make every floor a compulsory stop. A design enthusiast can spend that same afternoon very differently from a visitor whose main interest is painting.
Temporary exhibitions can give the visit a tighter focus, particularly on a return trip. Choose one when its subject is the reason you are coming, then fit the collection around it. A short list of priorities makes the scale manageable without reducing the museum to its best-known names.
West 53rd Street puts MoMA within a useful Midtown city day. Top of the Rock is a separate nearby skyline choice; combining them works when you want both art and a view, rather than because two admission tickets are automatically better than one. MoMA PS1 in Long Island City has a different building and experimental programme, so choose the Midtown museum or the Queens outing for its own character.

MoMA works well on a clear Midtown museum day, with a theatre performance or skyline visit chosen separately. Before evening tennis, keep the collection route focused and leave time to reach the 7. A show after a tennis session is a different commitment: the curtain will not wait for a long match. Use the Midtown West neighbourhood guide to decide which part of the city day matters most.
