01 / The experience
Go ashore for the monument, the torch and the immigration story.
The official island-landing ferry, with the Statue of Liberty Museum and immigration history at Ellis Island.
Landing on Liberty and Ellis Islands offers a much fuller encounter than passing the statue on a sightseeing boat. The crossing gives you the familiar harbour view, but the reason to choose this outing is the time ashore: the making of the monument on one island and the experience of arrival in America on the other.
The Statue of Liberty Museum on Liberty Island makes the monument’s construction tangible. The Engagement Gallery follows Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and the work of the artisans who designed and built it. The original torch is displayed in the Inspiration Gallery, where seeing its scale at close range adds something that a distant view from the water cannot. The rooftop offers another harbour perspective when open and conditions permit.
A museum-and-island visit is a complete choice without climbing inside the statue. Pedestal and crown reservations add different access, with their own booking and physical requirements. Choose those because you want that particular part of the monument, not because a general ferry ticket is assumed to include them.
Ellis Island shifts the subject from the monument to the people who passed through the immigration station. In the Registry Room, also called the Great Hall, the size and light of the restored space sit alongside the knowledge that arrivals faced medical and legal examination here. The surrounding exhibitions help explain the steps of that process and the wider immigration story. Give the island more than the time needed to walk into the hall and leave again.
For a first visit, choose a clear focus on each island: the torch and museum at Liberty, then the Registry Room and one exhibition route at Ellis. Security, boarding and the ferries between stops structure the day. They are part of the outing rather than spare time that can be borrowed for another attraction.
The New York departure is from the Battery, using the screening and embarkation instructions beside Castle Clinton. Liberty State Park is a New Jersey departure. Confirm which side your reservation uses before making the mainland journey; identical island names do not make the departure points interchangeable.

Plan your visit
Allow a substantial half-day, plus travel.
Admission & spending
Official round-trip island ferry: adults 13+ $26; ages 4–12 $17; seniors 62+ $23; under 4 free. Pedestal or crown reservations add $0.30. The island museums have no separate admission charge.
Tickets & visit detailsWhen to visit
Daily island visits; NPS lists Liberty Island 09:00–16:30 and Ellis Island 09:30–16:30. Ferry departures and island access vary by season; select an outbound and suitable return sailing.
Keep the two-island outing on a tennis-free day. The return ferry, mainland walk and subway trip to Queens make a tight connection to first serve a poor plan even when the crossing itself looks short. Harbour islands & Lower Manhattan is the itinerary to adapt, with this sailing as the main activity rather than adding Governors Island or a long museum visit. Crown or pedestal access must match the actual reservation.
Arrive
Bowling Green · 4/5. Walk into The Battery to the current Statue City Cruises screening facility beside Castle Clinton. Crown visitors first collect their tickets at the Castle Clinton kiosk. Travel estimates end at the Manhattan screening area; allow extra time for security, ferry queues and the island sailings.

Review ferry boarding, museum routes and monument access separately. The crown is reached by stairs and is not a step-free experience.
Journey times are estimates for ordinary daytime service, including the street approach. Add security, queues and any ferry or tram crossing separately. For a step-free journey, choose suitable stations and operating lifts; these routes are not an accessibility guarantee.
Choose a Manhattan base for the city outing, then use the guide’s stadium journey for the separate trip to Queens.
Plan your visit
Use Statue City Cruises for The Battery departure. The reservation time is the approximate security-queue time, not the sailing time. Reserve pedestal or crown access separately; the last ferry out may leave too little time for both islands.
