MoMA PS1
Contemporary art in a former school, close to the Long Island City hotel bases.
01 / The experience
Contemporary art inside a school that artists made their own.
A compact contemporary-art visit near Court Square.
MoMA PS1 is the Queens art visit for someone who wants to encounter a changing programme in an unusual building. The former public school remains central to the experience: rooms, passages and the courtyard give artists a setting with a history of its own. The visit is shaped as much by how work occupies that setting as by the individual objects on display.
Curator Alanna Heiss founded the organisation that became PS1 within New York’s alternative-space movement. Its first Rooms exhibition in 1976 invited artists to transform the disused school, and site-specific interventions remain part of the building’s character. That origin explains why this museum feels different from a purpose-built sequence of white galleries.
James Turrell’s Meeting gives the building’s history a particularly clear expression. This Skyspace opens a room to the sky, with light and the edges of the opening changing the way you perceive the space above. It is a reason to include the third floor when the installation is accessible, alongside the temporary exhibitions rather than instead of them.
Use the current exhibition programme to decide where to spend the afternoon. A large installation, a group presentation and a project in a smaller room can ask for different kinds of attention. The architecture is the consistent thread; individual artists and exhibitions are the changing part of the visit. There is no need to assume a future seasonal party or performance in order to enjoy the museum.
Long Island City gives the outing a useful second chapter. Gantry Plaza’s East River walk offers a change from the galleries, reached by a separate street journey towards Hunters Point. Meju is the destination-dinner option in that wider area, with its own reservation and evening format. Court Square, the waterfront and that restaurant are distinct locations, so choose the combination that fits the day.
PS1 and MoMA in Midtown are different museum visits. Pick the school-building programme for contemporary experimentation and a Queens day; pick Midtown for the larger modern-art collection route. Their shared institutional family does not make one a room in the other.

PS1 is useful for a Queens city morning or afternoon around a stay in LIC, subject to its opening day. Before evening tennis, choose the museum or a short waterfront extension rather than adding a full destination dinner. Queens value & waterfront is the trip to adapt. A special courtyard event needs its own date and conditions; ordinary museum admission does not reserve a performance.

The museum states that it is wheelchair accessible, with wheelchairs at the entrance and accessible lockers. Contact it for particular accommodation needs.
Journey times are estimates for ordinary daytime service, including the street approach. Add security, queues and any ferry or tram crossing separately. For a step-free journey, choose suitable stations and operating lifts; these routes are not an accessibility guarantee.
Pairs naturally with LIC Hotel and Hyatt Place Long Island City. Use Court Square for the 7 train, allowing for the station walk and stadium entry queues.
