Gantry Plaza State Park
East River views, historic gantries and an unhurried walk from a Long Island City base.
01 / The experience
The working waterfront becomes a place to look back at Manhattan.
A flexible outdoor break without a timed museum booking.
Gantry Plaza gives you the Manhattan skyline from the other side of the East River. The foreground is a Queens waterfront of piers, paths and gardens, so the view feels different from an observation room high above Midtown. It is a good choice when you want an outdoor city experience without another timed attraction ticket.
The restored gantries give the park its name and its strongest link to the industrial waterfront. They once helped load and unload railcar floats and barges. Standing beside those structures makes the history visible in the same frame as the city across the river: machinery built to move freight now defines a public place to walk and sit.
The four piers offer different points from which to read the river and skyline. A short visit can focus on the gantries and one pier; a longer one can follow more of the waterfront paths and garden areas. The Pepsi-Cola sign supplies another recognisable landmark. These details give the walk a direction beyond simply saving a pin labelled skyline view.
Pair it with PS1 when you want art and an outdoor afternoon, allowing the street walk between Court Square and the water. The guide’s LIC hotels are based around Court Square and Queensboro Plaza rather than directly beside every pier. The waterfront is a worthwhile outing from those hotels, not a view that every hotel room automatically supplies.
Choose daylight when seeing the waterfront structures and walking its paths is the priority. The river edge can be exposed to sun and changing weather, and facilities or programmes have their own operating arrangements. The park works well as a flexible part of a city day because the skyline itself is enough of a reason to come.

Confirm opening hours, admission and any holiday changes for your visit.
A short Gantry Plaza walk can fit before an evening session when you are staying in LIC, with time to reach the appropriate 7 station afterwards. Use Queens value & waterfront or Queens dining & waterfront for a fuller city day. Keep a long waterfront outing and a booked Meju dinner clear of a late tennis finish; the restaurant and the park have different timing needs.
Arrive
Vernon Blvd–Jackson Av · 7. Walk west along 48th or 49th Avenue towards the East River waterfront and the gantries. The park is separate from nearby Hunters Point South Park, although the waterfront walks connect.

Ask the park about the entrance, promenade surfaces and facilities that suit you. A waterfront pin does not establish a fully step-free route from every subway station.
Journey times are estimates for ordinary daytime service, including the street approach. Add security, queues and any ferry or tram crossing separately. For a step-free journey, choose suitable stations and operating lifts; these routes are not an accessibility guarantee.
A waterfront extension to a stay at either Long Island City hotel. Allow a separate walk between the river, your hotel and the 7 train rather than treating them as one station stop.
