01 / The experience
A harbour landscape of hills, art and room to explore.
Harbour views, walking and cycling on a former military island.
Governors Island gives New York an outdoor day with the city across the water. The former military setting, open landscapes and views towards the harbour make it feel different from a Manhattan park surrounded by streets. Choose it when walking, a picnic or a cycle ride is the main plan rather than a small stop between indoor attractions.
The Hills give the visit a clear destination. Outlook Hill offers a winding accessible path as well as a granite scramble, with a summit view across the harbour and towards the Statue of Liberty and skyline. Choose the route that suits your party. The ascent is part of the outing, not an automatic requirement for anyone who has taken the ferry.
Other hills offer different reasons to explore. Slide Hill introduces a playful family stop; Discovery Hill includes Rachel Whiteread’s Cabin, a permanent artwork within the planted landscape. Pick the elements you want rather than treating all of the island’s open space as one long circuit.
Hammock Grove changes the pace again, with red hammocks and paths among young trees. It can be the destination for a shorter walking outing instead of a climb. A bike changes how much of the island you can cover, but hire, particular events and other bookable experiences are separate from the ferry fare.
The historic buildings add to the setting without promising entry to every interior. Choose the day’s open exhibitions or activities as additions to the landscape visit. There is enough outdoors to shape the day around a few clear places, with food and water planned around the time you will be away from the mainland.
The ferry is the beginning and end of the plan. The mainland departure point, boarding wait, crossing and final return all matter, even when the time on the water is short. Choose Governors Island as its own harbour outing; it is not part of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island sailing.

Plan your visit
Allow a substantial half-day, plus travel.
Admission & spending
Island entry is free. Governors Island ferry round trip $5 adult; ages 12 and under and adults 65+ free. All riders travel free before 11:00 on Saturdays and Sundays. NYC Ferry uses a separate fare.
Tickets & visit detailsWhen to visit
Open daily year-round. Current autumn hours are 07:00–18:00. The published summer season runs until 22:00 Sun–Thu and 23:00 Fri–Sat; South Island Park, including the Hills and Hammock Grove, closes at dusk. Choose a return ferry within public opening hours.
Give Governors Island a clear city day and leave a generous return window before any evening commitment. Harbour islands & Lower Manhattan is the itinerary to adapt by choosing this outing rather than automatically adding a second island product. The journey estimate to the mainland approach excludes boarding and crossing. A last-minute departure from the island is not a dependable way to reach a fixed tennis session.
Arrive
Bowling Green · 4/5. Walk east towards the Battery Maritime Building at 10 South Street, the Governors Island ferry terminal. This is not the Statue ferry queue at Castle Clinton. Estimates end at 10 South Street; add boarding time and the island ferry crossing.
Island destination; Manhattan ferry from 10 South Street, New York, NY
Ferries and the island grounds offer wheelchair access, but not every historic building does. Current Fort Jay access uses a stair and uneven-ground route.
Journey times are estimates for ordinary daytime service, including the street approach. Add security, queues and any ferry or tram crossing separately. For a step-free journey, choose suitable stations and operating lifts; these routes are not an accessibility guarantee.
Choose a Manhattan base for the city outing, then use the guide’s stadium journey for the separate trip to Queens.
Plan your visit
Reserve a round-trip ferry, including a free sailing if eligible. Tickets normally open on the first day of the preceding month. After-hours restaurant/tenant ferries do not extend ordinary public access; QC NY and other paid attractions require separate reservations.
