Sylvia’s
Harlem hospitality, soul food and Sylvia Woods’s legacy make this a meaningful New York meal.
01 / The experience
A Harlem meal with a family history.
Harlem hospitality, soul food and Sylvia Woods’s legacy make this a meaningful New York meal.
Sylvia’s makes a Harlem visit about a full meal as well as the neighbourhood. Sylvia Woods opened the restaurant on Lenox Avenue in 1962, and the business continues to put that family history alongside its soul-food cooking. Fried chicken and collard greens are central reference points for a first visit.
Build the order around a main and the sides you most want. Smothered chicken provides another direction from fried chicken, while side dishes give the meal much of its character. This is a worthwhile place to choose a proper lunch or dinner, with enough appetite for the combination, rather than arrive for a quick taste between several other large meals.
The restaurant’s appeal includes its role as a gathering place. A seated meal gives that side of the business more room than a takeaway order, making Sylvia’s especially suitable when the group wants time at a table during a Harlem outing. The main dining room accommodates group occasions as well as individual restaurant visits.
Choose Sylvia’s for a food-led reason to spend part of the day in Harlem. Keep the neighbourhood journey as part of the plan: it deserves more than a detour made only to collect a famous name. The practical menu and booking details below help determine the right service for your day.
