Golden Steer Steakhouse
A 1958 West Sahara steakhouse with leather booths, prime beef and tableside Caesar salad and dessert service.
01 / The experience
The old Las Vegas steakhouse, right down to the tableside Caesar.
Golden Steer has been serving dinner on West Sahara Avenue since 1958. The leather booths, named celebrity tables and tableside service give it an identity that has little to do with the latest resort opening. Choose it when you want the old Las Vegas steakhouse experience: a substantial cut of beef, a Caesar salad prepared beside the table and enough ceremony to make dinner feel like a night out.
The history is visible in the way the room is arranged. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and the other Rat Pack regulars are part of the restaurant's story, and the named booths make a reservation here feel different from booking an anonymous casino dining room. A particular booth cannot be guaranteed, however. The point of going is the restaurant as a whole, rather than securing the exact seat associated with a famous diner.
Start by deciding how much steakhouse tradition you want on the table. The Caesar is priced per person, with a minimum order of two for the tableside presentation; that preparation is not offered in the bar or lounge. A wedge salad takes another familiar route, with Roquefort, bacon and pickled onions. The seafood tower brings king crab, shrimp, oysters and Maine lobster into a shared opening course, which can change how much beef you need afterwards.
The menu includes ribeye and other prime cuts alongside seafood and house specialities. Escargots de Bourgogne, shrimp de Jonghe and oysters Rockefeller give the early part of dinner an older American fine-dining character. Sides are worth ordering for the table, rather than automatically adding several to every steak. If the flaming dessert service is part of the attraction, leave room for it when choosing the earlier courses.
It is a particularly good match for a group who enjoy the rituals of dining out. The staff's tableside work becomes part of the evening, and there is enough shared food to keep the ordering sociable. A couple can make it equally celebratory with a salad, their preferred steaks and one dessert. This is a different mood from a chef's counter: the pleasure is in familiar dishes and a room with a long local history.
The location deserves attention. Golden Steer is at 308 West Sahara, outside the central resort dining corridors. It needs a deliberate journey, especially if your hotel is inside the circuit perimeter. Book a time that lets you arrive as a complete party, and use the official reservation channel. The restaurant does not honour reservations bought from third-party resellers, so paying someone for a hard-to-get slot can leave you without dinner.
