01 / The experience

Cinema as a building-sized spectacle.

The corner tower of Le Grand Rex gives boulevard Poissonnière one of its clearest entertainment landmarks. Opened in 1932, the cinema belongs to a period when the building around a film could be part of the attraction. Its Art Deco exterior announces that ambition before the audience reaches the doors.

Inside the atmospheric cinema

The main auditorium takes the idea further. Decorative architectural scenery and a vast ceiling create an atmospheric setting, with the screen and stage placed within a much larger imagined world. Seeing the room during a film, concert or architectural visit offers different experiences, so the specific programme matters to the visit.

Rex Studios is a separate interactive route through the world of making films. It uses staged spaces such as a director’s office, projection room, effects area and dubbing setting. Le Grand Rex describes it as an imaginary journey behind the scenes: its interest is participation and cinema craft, rather than a promise that every working technical area will be open.

Rex Studios and separately booked visits

That distinction makes the venue particularly versatile. A visitor interested in the building can select an architectural tour when offered; someone drawn to film-making can choose Rex Studios; an evening audience can attend the actual screening or stage event. Products may combine elements, but their stated inclusions determine access.

Outside, the illuminated frontage remains part of the Grands Boulevards street scene. Passage des Panoramas, Passage Jouffroy and Passage Verdeau offer a smaller-scale architectural sequence nearby, while Bouillon Chartier Grands Boulevards gives a classic dining-room counterpart to the cinema’s large public interior.
