01 / The experience
Tepoztlán · Ex Convento de la Natividad
Make the convent and a leisurely town lunch the default plan. Allow 8–10 hours from Mexico City, including traffic, with two to three hours reserved for the journey each way. Tepoztlán is in Morelos; do not accidentally book transport to Tepotzotlán in Estado de México.
Start at the Ex Convento de la Natividad, then leave time to choose local food and browse before a daylight departure. A mountain climb is a separate, strenuous version of the day, not a compulsory addition to a relaxed cultural visit.
Convent access: INAH lists free admission daily 09:00–18:00, last access 17:00. Its current notice limits ordinary access to the ground floor, with a maximum of 50 visitors; the lookout requires a reservation for groups of up to ten. Do not expect the full upstairs museum to be open.
Choose transport before lunch: Request a return car quote with waiting time, tolls and the agreed pickup place. For bus travel, check the current México Taxqueña–Tepoztlán service and the actual arrival stop through the operator before buying; include a local transfer to the convent and book the return.
If you want to hike: Check the Tepozteco archaeological site and trail status with INAH before travelling. Allow a separate early start and enough daylight to descend; use suitable footwear and carry water. Skip the ascent in poor weather or if steep uneven climbing does not suit your party. The convent pin is not a trailhead.
Food and a slower pace: Keep lunch flexible so you can inspect the menu, seating and ingredients before ordering. Ask for meat-free fillings explicitly if wanted, and retain a town-only option for children or tired legs. Market purchases and guiding are separate from the free convent visit.
