Meal supplements and extra drinks increase the total.Artisan bread & pastriesThe scored P is a small gesture with a long association. Before a Poilâne loaf enters the oven, the baker cuts the initial into its surface, leaving the house’s identity in the crust itself. At rue du Cherche-Midi, that familiar round loaf belongs to the address where Pierre Poilâne established the family bakery in 1932.
A manual baking method and the boutique
The method gives the bread its substance. Each baker handles the dough through an entirely manual sequence of fermentation, weighing, shaping and baking. A wooden fermentation box is part of that process, and the original shop still has a wood-fired bakehouse below. This is a working bakery, so buying bread in the shop is the ordinary visit; access to the bakehouse is not included.
Inside the small boutique, the focus stays on bread and the things that sit naturally beside it. Country-style sourdough is joined by butter biscuits and baked pastries. A substantial loaf suits several meals or a shared table, while a smaller purchase is more practical for a single picnic. The biscuit selection offers something easier to carry through a city day than a cake that needs to remain level.
Apple turnovers at the original shop
The apple turnover is another house speciality. Its folded puff-pastry shell holds apple compote, with an egg glaze giving the outside its golden finish. It has a different character from a cream-filled pâtisserie: a bakery pastry with fruit at its centre, suitable as a sweet stop alongside the bread. Individual products and their quantities depend on the day’s sales and production.
The original shop’s brick-and-wood setting gives it a different scale from Poilâne’s wider reputation. It remains a small address on a Saint-Germain street, with the shelves, counter and working shopfront doing more to explain the place than a large visitor display could. From here, the Luxembourg Gardens are close enough for a walk with the purchases, with chairs and the garden’s signed access rules determining where a food stop fits.
