01 / The experience
Sculpture between Hôtel Biron and the garden.
At Musée Rodin, a sculpture can be seen against the rooms of an eighteenth-century mansion and then encountered at a different scale outdoors. Hôtel Biron and its roughly three-hectare garden create two connected settings for the work, making the visit as much about changing viewpoints as identifying famous titles.
Rodin’s working process at Hôtel Biron
The indoor route follows Rodin's development and working methods. Studies, models and finished works show how figures were reworked, grouped and enlarged. The Gates of Hell is particularly revealing: the long project generated individual figures and relationships that connect with works including The Thinker and The Kiss. Seeing those connections makes the sculptures more than isolated masterpieces.
Other rooms explore public monuments, portraiture, assembly and fragmentation. Preparatory material for The Burghers of Calais gives a way into questions of grouping and the base beneath a sculpture, while the artist's relationship with Hôtel Biron is evoked through the way he used the rooms. Camille Claudel also has a place within the museum's account of this artistic world.
The sculpture garden in Paris
Outside, the garden changes the experience again. Paths and planting allow the monuments to be approached from more than one direction, with the house and landscape providing a setting very different from an indoor display. The outdoor works give the visit a spatial quality that photographs of a single frontal view can miss.
The Paris museum is the rue de Varenne address, distinct from Rodin's separate Meudon site. Its particular appeal is the combination of sculpture, working process and garden. The mansion gives intimacy and historical context; the grounds allow the larger works to occupy the space around the visitor.
