Boulangerie Utopie
An inventive neighbourhood bakery whose breads and viennoiseries use sourdough and long fermentation, with a Paris baguette prize in its history.
01 / The experience
Long fermentation, a new idea every weekend.
EUR estimates per person: $ up to €35 · $$ up to €80 · $$$ up to €150 · $$$$ above €150. Meal supplements and extra drinks increase the total.Artisan bread & pastriesUtopie’s weekly rhythm leaves room for an experiment. Alongside the everyday breads and pastries, the team creates a new bread, viennoiserie and pâtisserie each weekend. That gives a repeat visit a reason beyond buying the same breakfast again: something seasonal or short-lived may appear beside the familiar pain au chocolat and apple turnover.
Sourdough, long fermentation and the baguette
The underlying method is less changeable. Breads and viennoiseries begin with sourdough and long fermentation, an approach the bakery applies across the range. Ingredients are worked into the products on site rather than relying on bought-in finished pastries. The counter therefore brings together the work of bakers and pastry cooks within a compact neighbourhood shop.
There is a well-earned baguette connection too. Xavier Netry, Utopie’s head baker, won the City of Paris’s Grand Prix for the traditional baguette in 2024. The competition judged baking, taste, crumb, airiness and appearance, giving the award a specific meaning beyond a general claim to be the city’s best bakery. That result belongs to 2024; the pleasure of visiting now is finding the bread and pastry selection being made today.
The corner shop and the weekend creations
The grey-fronted corner shop was established by Erwan Blanche and Sébastien Bruno, two pastry-school friends. Large windows reveal the counter and bread shelves, with the surrounding streets doing much of the work of a café setting. It is easy to make this a takeaway breakfast or a bread stop before walking towards République, rather than expecting a leisurely restaurant service.
A pain au chocolat is the straightforward morning choice, while a fruit pastry or one of the weekend creations gives the visit a different emphasis. Bread for a picnic can share the bag with something sweet, provided the more delicate items will survive the walk. Utopie’s appeal comes from the combination of a proper daily bakery and the freedom to try a new idea in a small batch.
