01 / The experience

Cholula · archaeology beneath the great pyramid

Choose a long day with a booked driver or spend one night in Puebla. A one-day combination is a 10–12-hour commitment from Mexico City; an overnight leaves time for a proper Poblano lunch and an unhurried second morning. These are travel allowances, with traffic and queues affecting the day.

For one day, put Cholula first on a Wednesday–Sunday opening day, allow two hours for the archaeological visit, then transfer to Puebla for lunch and a walk around the Zócalo. Keep the return flexible and avoid a prepaid dinner in Mexico City. For an overnight, enjoy Puebla on arrival and visit Cholula the next morning before returning.

Book the whole journey: For a driver, request hotel pickup, both cities, waiting time, tolls, parking and the return address in one quote; ask separately about guiding and admissions. Independently, compare ADO tickets from México TAPO to Puebla CAPU, then arrange local transfers. CAPU, CAPU Sur and Paseo Destino are different terminals: match both tickets to the actual station.

Cholula admission: INAH lists Wednesday–Sunday 09:00–17:00, MXN 210 foreign visitors or MXN 105 nationals. Confirm the areas open before paying; do not make underground tunnels a promised part of the day. The hilltop church and the archaeological visit are separate stops, with an uphill approach.

Make lunch part of the trip: Leave 90 minutes for a Poblano meal rather than squeezing in another monument. Look for mole poblano, cemitas or chalupas and confirm ingredients and prices when choosing a restaurant. Ask about nut and sesame ingredients in mole; a seasonal dish is not guaranteed in late October.

Overnight booking order: Choose the Cholula opening day, book transport and a refundable central Puebla room, then reserve lunch. Compare the complete room total, parking and luggage arrangements. No Puebla hotel reservation is included in the Mexico City accommodation allowance.

Gentler option: Choose Puebla alone for a plaza and lunch day, or keep Cholula to the permitted lower archaeological paths. Steps, slopes and uneven surfaces remain; ask the venue and driver about mobility assistance before committing.
