01 The experience
What to expect.
Start the day among heritage trees, quiet lawns and the lake at Singapore’s UNESCO World Heritage garden. It is a rewarding change of pace before an F1 evening, with a worthwhile free walk and an optional paid orchid visit.
A focused morning from Tanglin
Arrive at Tanglin Gate from Napier MRT and follow the garden map towards Swan Lake, the Bandstand and Ginger Garden. Take time to look at the trees, sculptures and landscape rather than trying to walk the full length of the gardens.
A 60–90-minute free walk suits a race-day morning. Add the National Orchid Garden after its 08:30 opening and allow two to three hours for the combined outing. For a shorter orchid-focused visit, use the Tyersall drop-off approach.
Add the orchids
The National Orchid Garden’s displays, arches and Tropical Montane Orchidetum give a longer visit a clear destination. Its standard adult admission is S$15, separate from the free grounds. Most of the wider garden visit is outdoors; start early, bring water and leave time for the return to the city.

Highlights worth your time.
The strongest reasons to include this place in your plans.Swan Lake & the heritage landscape
The lawns, lake and mature trees reveal an older layer of Singapore’s landscape. Begin here from Tanglin rather than rushing directly to the paid attraction.
The Bandstand
The octagonal pavilion and its surrounding planting make a recognisable stop on the heritage walk. Enjoy the landscape around it; it is not a promise of a live music performance.
National Orchid Garden
Choose the orchid upgrade for concentrated displays and the Tropical Montane Orchidetum’s specialised display houses. It is a different botanical experience from the main gardens and from Gardens by the Bay’s conservatories.
Forest paths when conditions allow
A longer visit can include the Rain Forest or Learning Forest. These areas have their own opening times and weather closures. Use the marked trails and choose a shorter garden route if storms approach.

Choose the right end of the gardens
Tanglin Gate · start of the heritage walk
Singapore Botanic Gardens, Tanglin entrance, near Napier Road and Holland Road
Use Napier MRT for Tanglin entrance, then follow the garden map towards Swan Lake, the Bandstand and Ginger Garden.
For a shorter orchid-focused visit, ask a taxi to use Tyersall entrance; it is the operator’s preferred orchid parking and drop-off approach.
Botanic Gardens MRT serves the Bukit Timah entrance at the other end. Allow for the walk through the gardens if you choose that station.
Walk in; add the Orchid Garden
No general admission booking is needed for the main gardens. Decide whether you want to add the National Orchid Garden.
Buy orchid tickets at its entrance, and bring identification if using a student, senior or local rate.
Use the signed wheelchair route where it avoids stairs. Bring water, walking shoes and rain protection; most of the route is outdoors.
Accessibility
The National Orchid Garden is wheelchair accessible. Use its signed accessible route to avoid stairs, and choose Tyersall drop-off for an orchid-focused visit.
The main gardens are large and mostly outdoors. Choose a shorter path, allow rest stops and do not rely on the forest trails remaining open during storms.
Participation requirements
Main gardens free; National Orchid Garden separately ticketed at its entrance.
Choose your route
Free heritage walk: use Tanglin entrance, near Napier MRT, for Swan Lake, heritage trees, the Bandstand and the path towards Ginger Garden. Allow 60–90 minutes for a focused route with pauses.
Gardens with orchids: start at Tanglin or use Tyersall entrance for a shorter approach to the National Orchid Garden. Visit after 08:30 and allow two to three hours overall, according to how much walking you want.
A longer stay: the operator suggests four to five hours for an unhurried exploration. Keep this for an arrival or extension day, with forest paths added only when weather conditions permit.
Free entry and orchid tickets
The main gardens are free, open 05:00–midnight. National Orchid Garden opens 08:30–19:00, with last ticket sale and entry 18:00.
Standard orchid admission is S$15 adult, S$3 senior aged 60+ or student, and free for children under 12. Local rates are S$5 adult and S$1 senior or student, with eligibility checks. Buy at the Orchid Garden entrance and carry relevant identification.
Arrive at the correct entrance
Napier MRT serves Tanglin entrance. Botanic Gardens MRT serves Bukit Timah entrance at the other end of the site; these are different starting points.
If you want orchids with less walking, tell your taxi driver Tyersall entrance, the operator’s preferred orchid parking and drop-off approach. Use the garden map to continue to the Orchid Garden ticket counter.
Weather and closures
Rain Forest and Learning Forest paths are daytime choices and can close in unsafe weather. Follow on-site closures. The Public Reference Library is closed until 2027; do not build the visit around it.
Finish with enough time for the walk back to transport, the journey into the city and the permitted route to your F1 gate.
Visit your way
Access and family planning.
The National Orchid Garden is wheelchair accessible. Follow the marked accessible route where it avoids steps, and use Tyersall drop-off if orchids are your main destination. Ask visitor services about the route that best suits your equipment and walking tolerance.
The gardens cover a large outdoor landscape. Tanglin and Bukit Timah are different ends of the site, so choose an entrance close to what you want to see. A shorter lake-and-lawn route may be more comfortable than a full-site walk.
Bring water, sun protection and rain protection. Forest attractions may close during unsafe weather; the main garden hours do not guarantee every trail is open throughout that period.

03Which MRT station should I use?
