Arc de Triomphe
Visit the monument and look across Paris from its rooftop terrace.
01 / The experience
A memorial below, a city plan above.
From the Arc de Triomphe's terrace, the avenues radiating from Étoile become one of the main subjects of the view. The monument gives Paris a different shape from the river-level panorama: streets spread out in several directions, with the Champs-Élysées forming the best-known axis.
The triumphal arch and the Unknown Soldier
The arch began in 1806 on Napoleon I's orders to commemorate the victories of his armies. Its form draws on ancient triumphal arches, while names of battles and generals from the Revolution and First Empire cover parts of the structure. The sculpted exterior and inscriptions give the ground-level visit substance even before the climb.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier introduces a different historical meaning below the arch. Its flame is rekindled each evening, connecting the imperial monument with remembrance of the First World War. That space changes the character of the site from a panoramic attraction to a place of continuing ceremony.
The rooftop terrace and pedestrian approach
The interior and terrace visit brings the building's scale into another perspective. Reaching the roof makes the surrounding traffic circle and the avenues visible as a single urban arrangement, while distant monuments give points of orientation. The panorama is particularly useful for understanding how this western part of Paris connects with the city beyond it.
The pedestrian underpass is the approach to use; the surrounding traffic lanes are not a crossing route. The currently reported lift maintenance makes stairs a consequential part of choosing the terrace visit, with future arrangements depending on reopening. The attraction has two distinct strengths: the memorial and carved monument at ground level, and the broad reading of Paris from above.
