01 / The experience

### An artists’ square, still at work.

An easel changes the way a square is used. Around Place du Tertre, paintings stand between café terraces and the routes taken by people crossing [Montmartre](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/montmartre>) , while portrait artists work with a sitter only a few steps from the passing crowd. It is a busy, commercial place, but it also remains a working outdoor studio. Watching the process gives the visit more substance than simply walking through the souvenir-filled streets around it.

#### The Carré aux artistes and village-scale square

The city allocates authorised spaces in the Carré aux artistes to painters, portraitists, caricaturists and silhouette cutters. Artists share numbered pitches in rotation, so the people and work on view change. That arrangement explains the variety within a small area: a completed landscape, a rapidly developing portrait and a cut-paper profile can occupy neighbouring corners without being part of a single exhibition or organised performance.

The surrounding buildings keep the scene at village scale. Low façades, awnings and trees enclose the square, with tables pushed towards its edges and narrow streets leading away from the centre. The architecture works best as part of the artists’ setting rather than as an isolated monument. A circuit around the perimeter reveals different views through the easels and café seating, while a quieter side street can be only a few moments away from the central crowd.

#### Commissioning a portrait and continuing around the hill

A portrait is a separate purchase from a particular artist. Style, size, price and the time you will need to sit are worth settling before work begins; an open-air visit itself costs nothing. The distinction is useful for families and companions who want different things from the square. Someone can browse the finished work while another watches a drawing take shape, without everyone committing to a paid activity.

Place du Tertre is close enough to [Dalí Paris](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/dali-paris>) and [Sacré-Cœur](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/sacre-coeur-montmartre>) to be the outdoor link between them. [Musée de Montmartre](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/musee-de-montmartre>) is another short continuation through the upper streets. The square makes sense within that wider day, particularly with a chosen museum or lunch stop giving the outing a second focus. Its appeal is the active mixture of art-making, terraces and pedestrian life, rather than a promise of a particular artist or an empty, postcard-perfect scene.
