01 / The experience

### A covered street that still has places to go.

The glass roof of Passage Jouffroy turns a shopping street into a long indoor perspective. Iron supports carry the pointed glazing above small façades, while the floor and changing shop windows keep the walk at a more intimate scale than boulevard [Montmartre](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/montmartre>) outside.

#### Iron, glass and the change in level

Opened in the nineteenth century, the passage used iron and glass as defining construction materials. Those elements remain the main architectural subject. The rhythm of the roof can be read along the length of the arcade, then broken into smaller details around doors, signs and changes in the floor level.

It also remains a working address. Books, paper goods and other specialist shops sit beside food stops, the entrance to Musée Grévin and the Hôtel Chopin at the quieter end. Those destinations bring different visitors into the same covered route; it is a lived commercial passage rather than a sealed historical interior.

#### Shopfronts and the Grévin doorway

The connection to neighbouring passages gives it a larger role. Together they form a useful sequence, with outdoor crossings between the covered sections.

Jouffroy’s interest does not depend on buying a museum ticket or booking a table. Its roof, shopfronts and changing levels provide a short architectural visit on their own. A longer outing can add the other passages and [Bouillon Chartier Grands Boulevards](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/bouillon-chartier-grands-boulevards>) , keeping each business’s opening and admission distinct from access to the arcade.
