01 / The experience

### Monet’s Water Lilies and a second collection below.

Monet's Water Lilies curve around the oval rooms at the Musée de l'Orangerie. The paintings are experienced as an environment rather than a single framed object, with the walls and filtered light supporting a continuous view. The changing colour and reflection have room to occupy the visitor's field of vision.

#### Monet’s Water Lilies and the lower galleries

Monet offered the great series to France, and the rooms give it a particularly specific setting. A first look across the whole space reveals the scale; a closer view brings the painted surface and the transitions between water, sky and vegetation into focus. The visit can move between those two distances without requiring a fixed route from one separate painting to the next.

The museum has another substantial side on the lower level. The Jean Walter and Paul Guillaume collections bring together artists including Renoir, Cézanne, Matisse, Picasso and Soutine. They provide a different kind of looking after the immersive Water Lilies rooms, with individual works and varied approaches to painting replacing the continuous panorama.

#### A museum visit at the edge of the Tuileries

That contrast gives the museum more range than its most famous image suggests. A visit interested mainly in Monet can still gain another perspective from the wider collection, while visitors following early twentieth-century painting have a reason to look beyond the upper rooms. Temporary exhibitions add further subjects according to the programme.

The [Tuileries](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/louvre-tuileries>) setting places the museum within a garden rather than along a busy shopping street. Outdoors and indoors have a clear relationship here, but the museum's particular attraction is the transition between two kinds of art experience: Monet's enveloping painted spaces and the more varied, concentrated encounters with the collection below.
