01 / The experience

### A former palace with many possible routes through art.

The Louvre's collections occupy a palace large enough to shape the visit before a single artwork is seen. Courtyards, long façades, staircases and former royal rooms connect with galleries from many periods and places. The glass pyramid provides the best-known modern entrance image, but the building's older spaces remain part of the experience throughout.

#### Collections inside a former royal palace

The collection allows very different visits. Greek sculpture brings the Venus de Milo and the Winged Victory of Samothrace into view; painting leads towards the Mona Lisa and a much broader range of European work. Antiquities and decorative arts offer other routes, so the museum is better approached through a few connected interests than as a race between three famous objects.

The setting often adds another story to the art. The Greek antiquities occupy spaces once used as royal apartments, while monumental staircases change the approach to large sculpture. A work can therefore be understood through its material and history as well as the way the palace now frames it.

#### Choosing rooms and exploring the courtyards

That range makes selection important for the quality of the visit. A route centred on painting will use different rooms and levels from one focused on sculpture or ancient cultures. Room closures, loans and changing displays can affect individual works, but the museum's scale means there is usually much more within a chosen subject than a first plan suggests.

The palace also has a strong outdoor presence. The courtyards and the route towards the [Tuileries](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/louvre-tuileries>) are worthwhile architectural spaces, with a completely different pace from the galleries. They provide context for the museum without requiring another interior visit.

The Louvre's appeal is in that combination of a vast collection and a building with its own history. The most memorable route is often the one that lets a few rooms and works form a coherent sequence, with the palace remaining visible around them.
