01 / The experience

### Behind the posters, the rooms where artists lived.

A studio window, a cabaret poster and a garden path tell different parts of the same [Montmartre](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/montmartre>) story. This museum brings them together at 12 rue Cortot, where the neighbourhood’s artistic life becomes something more tangible than the familiar image of painters on a hill. The buildings and gardens are part of the appeal, with a route that moves between public entertainment and the more private world of an artist’s home.

#### Cabarets, posters and the Valadon studio

The permanent collection follows the development of the Butte through paintings, prints, photographs and objects. Artists including Suzanne Valadon, Maurice Utrillo, Steinlen and Toulouse-Lautrec connect the streets outside to the work made here. Posters and material associated with the cabarets show how music, performance and graphic design helped create [Montmartre](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/montmartre>) ’s reputation. A room devoted to Henri Rivière’s shadow theatre recalls the Chat Noir through the zinc silhouettes used to make its elaborate stage pictures.

The reconstructed studio-apartment offers a different kind of encounter. Valadon, Utrillo and André Utter moved to this address in 1912. The furnished rooms visitors see today were recreated by designer Hubert Le Gall using period photographs, written accounts and clues in Valadon’s paintings. They are not an untouched collection of the artists’ original possessions. That distinction makes the arrangement easier to read: the stove, furniture, textiles and studio glazing explain how the space could have worked as both a home and a workplace.

#### The Renoir gardens and vineyard setting

Outside, the Renoir gardens take their name from the painter’s time here in 1875–76. Paths, planted beds and quieter seating areas provide a change from the busy streets around [Place du Tertre](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/place-du-tertre>) . The lower gardens adjoin the Clos- [Montmartre](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/montmartre>) vines; looking towards the vineyard is part of the setting, while entry to the vineyard itself belongs to a separate guided visit.

The museum suits a substantial morning or afternoon, particularly if you want [Montmartre](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/montmartre>) ’s history to have more depth than a basilica-and-square walk. Its mix of collection rooms, a furnished studio and gardens gives companions with different interests something distinct to follow. Café Renoir can extend the garden part of the visit, while rue Cortot leads back into the neighbourhood for lunch.
