01 / The experience

### Market morning along Richard-Lenoir.

$ EUR estimate per person for picnic purchases. Quantities, weights and trader prices determine the total. Market produce, cheese & prepared food

Market day changes the central strip of boulevard Richard-Lenoir. Awnings run beneath the trees, traders arrange produce along the aisles and shopping bags replace the usual through-walk. The July Column helps locate the southern end of the outing, but the interest is at pavement level: the changing displays and the succession of small food businesses sharing the boulevard.

#### Produce beneath the market awnings

Fruit and vegetables give the market much of its colour. Crates, bunches and baskets make it possible to compare produce across several traders, while the larger food selection includes cheese, bread and prepared-food counters. Some purchases are ingredients for a meal later; others can be eaten without a kitchen. That difference matters more to a visitor than filling a bag simply because the display looks inviting.

The open-air arrangement is part of the experience. Canopies shelter individual stalls rather than enclosing a single building, and the route moves between shaded stretches and gaps where the boulevard opens up. There is no fixed indoor exhibition to follow. The market is a place to browse, make small purchases and watch the practical work of selling food in the city.

#### Picnic shopping between Bastille and the Marais

A bread-and-cheese lunch can grow out of the shopping, with fruit providing something easier to carry than a fragile dessert. Prepared dishes offer another route, although menus and the traders attending change. Prices displayed at one stall apply to that seller; a cheese marked by the kilogram is a different proposition from a priced portion or sandwich.

The market occupies a useful position between Bastille and the streets leading towards the [Marais](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/le-marais-bastille>) . [Place des Vosges](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/place-des-vosges>) and the existing neighbourhood museums provide nearby continuations after the morning stalls. The day needs to begin with the market calendar, however: outside its Thursday and Sunday sessions, this boulevard walk has a different character, and Saturday’s creative market is a separate event.
