01 / The experience

### A gilded dome above a much larger story.

The dome of Les Invalides is a familiar part of the Paris skyline, but the visit begins with a much larger complex. Long façades, gateways and the cour d’Honneur belong to a foundation created under Louis XIV for veterans and wounded soldiers. The museum occupies that historic setting, bringing weapons, armour, uniforms and personal objects into buildings whose original purpose was care as well as military identity.

#### Napoleon’s tomb beneath the Dôme

Napoleon’s tomb gives the Dôme its most famous subject. The monumental burial setting sits beneath the gilded dome, with the architecture directing attention towards the sarcophagus below. This is a distinct part of the visit, with different movement and access conditions from the collection rooms. The free-access cathedral of Saint-Louis des Invalides and the ticketed Dôme should not be confused simply because both belong to the same complex.

The arms and armour collections offer another scale of encounter. The shaped plates of a suit of armour, its joints and the relationship between protective equipment and ceremonial display are more revealing than a distant view of a crowded case. Royal armour sits within a collection extending well beyond Napoleon, so an armour-focused visit can have a different emphasis from a route through the modern conflicts.

#### Armour, world wars and smaller collections

The Taxi de la Marne is one of the recognisable objects in the museum’s twentieth-century coverage. It places a vehicle associated with the First World War within rooms concerned with a much wider conflict. Uniforms, photographs and objects in the two world-war sections bring personal evidence alongside the larger military narrative; the Historial Charles de Gaulle adds another form of interpretation rather than another line of display cases.

The Cabinets insolites and the Musée des Plans-Reliefs offer further alternatives. Small and unusual collection subjects change the scale again, while the relief maps treat defended places as three-dimensional landscapes. These are reasons to choose a route through the complex rather than assuming that seeing the tomb amounts to seeing the whole museum.

The standard museum-and-exhibitions ticket connects these choices with the Dôme, the Musée de l’Ordre de la Libération and the Musée des Plans-Reliefs. The cour d’Honneur can also be approached without museum admission. From here, the nearby [Musée Rodin](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/musee-rodin-paris>) makes a useful separate visit, while the river view on a Bateaux Parisiens cruise provides an exterior impression of the district rather than access to the collections.
