01 / The experience

### From the Marais mansions to Bastille’s garden railway.

A courtyard, a square and an old railway give this part of Paris three very different scales. [Carnavalet](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/musee-carnavalet>) brings the city into the rooms of two historic mansions. [Place des Vosges](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/place-des-vosges>) opens those enclosed streets into a formal garden and a circuit of arcades. Beyond Bastille, the [Coulée verte](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/coulee-verte-rene-dumont>) carries a walk above the traffic and then into the cuttings of a former railway. They belong to the same broad outing, but each offers a distinct reason to spend time here.

#### Carnavalet and Place des Vosges

The museum streets are a good starting point for the Marais. [Carnavalet](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/musee-carnavalet>) connects archaeological finds, shop signs, decorated interiors and personal possessions with the history of Paris. Its free permanent collections can occupy a substantial morning. A visit can follow the whole chronological route or spend more time with a few sections, with the mansions and courtyards contributing as much architectural interest as the objects inside.

[Place des Vosges](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/place-des-vosges>) changes the rhythm. The central garden gives room to sit among trees and fountains, while the covered perimeter brings brick-and-stone architecture close enough to examine individual arches and windows. [Victor Hugo’s house](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/maison-victor-hugo>) adds a smaller indoor visit on the south side. Its red salon and Chinese decorative panels connect writing with domestic interiors, and its exhibition programme can change both the admission price and the available rooms.

#### Carette, bistros and the route towards Bastille

Food stops provide several different directions. [Carette](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/carette-place-des-vosges>) occupies the north arcade for pâtisserie, hot chocolate or a light café meal. [Chez Janou](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/chez-janou>) , just beyond the square, takes a Provençal approach with panisse, tapenade and a large pastis selection. Towards Bastille, [Bistrot des Tournelles](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/bistrot-des-tournelles>) concentrates on dinner and a meat-led French menu, while [Bofinger](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/bofinger>) brings Alsatian choucroute and seafood into a larger brasserie setting. They offer different occasions rather than four versions of the same lunch.

#### The Coulée verte and choosing a museum day

Bastille is also the handoff to a longer outdoor outing. The western [Coulée verte](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/coulee-verte-rene-dumont>) follows the railway viaduct above avenue Daumesnil; its full route continues through gardens, tunnels and wooded cuttings across the 12th arrondissement. A short out-and-back belongs comfortably beside lunch, while the complete 4.5-kilometre walk needs more time and a journey planned from its other end. Lift availability matters for a step-free approach.

A museum day is usually best placed Tuesday to Sunday because [Carnavalet](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/musee-carnavalet>) and the [Maison de Victor Hugo](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/maison-victor-hugo>) normally close Monday. A square, café and restaurant outing has different constraints and can work without either museum. Starting at [Carnavalet](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/musee-carnavalet>) gives the museum day a clear direction; beginning at Bastille puts the railway gardens and a brasserie lunch first.
