01 / The experience

### Surrealism with something to walk around.

A melting clock behaves differently when you can walk around it. At Dalí Paris, familiar surrealist images become sculpture, giving solid form to ideas that often seem to belong only on a painted surface. The museum’s position just off [Place du Tertre](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/place-du-tertre>) makes it an easy indoor addition to the hill, but its subject is a particular collection rather than the general history of [Montmartre](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/montmartre>) .

#### Sculpture and Dalí’s recurring motifs

The collection was assembled by Beniamino Levi, the gallerist, collector and publisher who worked with Dalí. Sculpture and graphic works form its core. The changing relationship between an object and its shadow, or between a slender support and an exaggerated form, is especially clear in three dimensions. Figures, animals and distorted everyday objects occupy the galleries alongside framed works, so the visit alternates between looking across a room and studying something at close range.

Dalí’s recurring motifs provide a way into that variety. Soft watches unsettle the solidity of time; drawers turn a human figure into something that appears to contain hidden compartments; elongated animals and improbable balances question ordinary scale. Seeing several such ideas within the same collection makes their connections easier to follow. The effect comes from the forms themselves, rather than requiring a long explanation of every reference before entering.

#### Illustrated works and a hilltop museum visit

The illustrated works open another part of Dalí’s imagination. His responses to Alice in Wonderland, Don Quixote and the Bible place recognisable stories within a visual language of unexpected colours and transformations. They offer a useful counterpoint to the freestanding pieces: a visitor interested in books and drawing may find as much to explore here as someone coming for the bronze sculptures.

This is a focused museum visit rather than a substitute for a major survey of Dalí’s paintings. It works particularly well beside the outdoor artists’ square, where the contrast between contemporary portrait-making and surrealist invention is immediate. [Sacré-Cœur](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/sacre-coeur-montmartre>) and the [Musée de Montmartre](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/musee-de-montmartre>) offer quite different continuations, so one indoor collection can be enough for a short hilltop outing. The staircase entrance is a consequential part of that choice and rules out a step-free visit.
