01 / The experience

### From royal household to Revolutionary prison.

The riverside towers give the Conciergerie a fortress-like face, but its great medieval halls reveal the household behind the royal palace. Rows of columns and low ribbed vaults spread across the Salle des Gens d’Armes, a space built for the people who served the king. Its scale is the first surprise: this was infrastructure for a working palace, rather than a small private royal chamber.

#### A Gothic palace and its medieval halls

The surviving rooms belong to the medieval Palais de la Cité. The Salle des Gardes and royal kitchens add other parts of that practical world. An architectural visit can follow how the vaults, supporting columns and service spaces fit together, with the river frontage remaining an important part of the palace’s position on the island.

After the kings left, judicial activity and imprisonment took a larger role. During the Revolution, the Conciergerie held prisoners awaiting the Revolutionary Tribunal. The prison displays give that change a human scale through confinement, procedure and the conditions that separated one prisoner’s experience from another’s.

#### The prison and Marie-Antoinette memorial

Marie-Antoinette is the best-known prisoner associated with the site. The Expiatory Chapel commemorates her imprisonment on the site of her cell; it is a later memorial, rather than an untouched room preserved exactly as she knew it. Seeing it beside the older palace rooms makes the building’s different historical layers particularly clear.

A Histopad can add reconstructions to the visit, helping explain spaces whose original uses are no longer visible. The physical rooms remain the reason to come: medieval vaults, prison routes and memorial spaces held within a building still tied to the island’s judicial precinct. [Sainte-Chapelle](<https://above.guide/paris/things-to-do/sainte-chapelle>) is close by, but its stained-glass interior offers a very different encounter with the same former royal palace.
