01 / Why it matters

### More than a stop on a list.

The far end of the Port Meadow walk, where the Thames splits beside a ruined abbey and a terrace hangs over the weir.

The Trout stands where the Thames divides at Godstow, beside the bridge and within sight of the ruins of Godstow Abbey. It is principally seventeenth century with eighteenth-century alterations, and Grade II listed. It is the natural end of the long walk north across Port Meadow, and the reason most people finish it. The terrace runs along the water beside the weir, which is where everyone sits when the weather allows and where nobody hurries. It appears in Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited and became one of the most-used locations in Inspector Morse, which between them account for a good share of the visitors on any given afternoon.

### Find it

05 / Good to know

### Questions,
answered.

01 How far is the walk?

About two and a half miles north across Port Meadow from Jericho — an hour at an unhurried pace, and flat the whole way.

02 Is it worth going in winter?

The terrace is the draw, so summer suits it best, but the inside is warm and the meadow is at its most dramatic in flood.

03 Was it really in Morse?

Repeatedly — it is among the series’ most recognisable locations, along with Brideshead Revisited before it.
