## Oxford areas & neighbourhoods

Oxford beyond the historic core — the useful visitor districts, what each is like, and why you'd make the trip out.

[Browse the districts](<https://above.guide/oxford/neighbourhoods#districts>)

The colleges and museums cluster in the compact centre, but Oxford's character spreads into a ring of distinct inner districts, most a short walk, cycle or bus hop from Carfax. Here's how to read the ones worth your time.

8 districts

*direction.*

Northwest of the centre

#### Jericho

Fashionable, bohemian Victorian suburb of terraced streets beside the Oxford Canal, centred on Walton Street.

Independent cafés, restaurants and bars, the historic Phoenix Picturehouse cinema, canal-side walks and the Oxford University Press building make it an easy, atmospheric stroll just northwest of the centre.

- [**The Ashmolean Museum** On the edge of Jericho, and free.](<https://above.guide/oxford/things-to-do/ashmolean-museum>)
- [**Port Meadow** The meadow starts at the end of Walton Well Road.](<https://above.guide/oxford/things-to-do/port-meadow>)
- [**The Eagle and Child** The Inklings’ pub, on St Giles.](<https://above.guide/oxford/things-to-do/eagle-and-child>)

East, over Magdalen Bridge

#### Cowley Road / East Oxford

Vibrant, multicultural and youthful — the city's most diverse quarter.

The best concentration of world cuisine, independent shops, music venues, nightlife and street life in Oxford, and home to the annual Cowley Road Carnival.

- [**The Chequers** Back in the centre, down a passage off the High.](<https://above.guide/oxford/things-to-do/the-chequers>)
- [**Oxford Botanic Garden** The nearest of the great gardens, at Magdalen Bridge.](<https://above.guide/oxford/things-to-do/oxford-botanic-garden>)

North, up the Banbury Road

#### Summertown

Affluent, leafy residential suburb with a village-like shopping parade.

Good delis, cafés, restaurants and everyday shops along the Banbury Road, and a pleasant, quieter base north of the centre.

- [**University Parks** The southern end of the walk down from Summertown.](<https://above.guide/oxford/things-to-do/university-parks>)

East, up the hill

#### Headington

Large mixed suburb on the hill east of the city, home to major hospitals and Oxford Brookes University.

The quirky 'Headington Shark' house is a photo stop, and it's the gateway to South Park's skyline panorama and the wilder Shotover Country Park.

- [**Oxford University Museum of Natural History** On the way in along the London Road.](<https://above.guide/oxford/things-to-do/museum-natural-history>)

West, by the station

#### Osney Island

Small, tranquil residential island of Victorian cottages hemmed by channels of the Thames.

Pretty riverside lanes, weirs and a lock, just minutes from the railway station — a peaceful pocket of water on the western edge of the core.

- [**Oxford Castle** Five minutes east, across the Castle Mill Stream.](<https://above.guide/oxford/things-to-do/oxford-castle>)
- [**Salter's Steamers** Folly Bridge, and the Isis rather than the Cherwell.](<https://above.guide/oxford/things-to-do/salters-steamers>)
- [**Head of the River** The pub at Folly Bridge — Fuller’s, not Salter’s.](<https://above.guide/oxford/things-to-do/head-of-the-river>)

East, at The Plain

#### St Clement's

Compact inner district of pubs, small shops and Victorian terraces just over the river from the centre.

Handy for pubs and cheaper eating, centred on The Plain roundabout at the east end of Magdalen Bridge and the start of the Cowley/Iffley Road corridor.

- [**Oxford Botanic Garden** Over Magdalen Bridge, at the end of the High.](<https://above.guide/oxford/things-to-do/oxford-botanic-garden>)
- [**Punt the Cherwell** Magdalen Bridge boathouse is at the foot of St Clement’s.](<https://above.guide/oxford/things-to-do/punting-the-cherwell>)

South, along the Thames

#### Iffley (village and lock)

A preserved former village of thatched cottages within the city, famous for one of England's finest Norman churches.

The 12th-century church of St Mary the Virgin and the scenic Iffley Lock make a classic riverside walk from the centre; the towpath here is prime rowing territory.

- [**Christ Church Meadow** The towpath runs up from Iffley Lock to the meadow.](<https://above.guide/oxford/things-to-do/christ-church-meadow>)

North, past Port Meadow

#### Wolvercote

Semi-rural northern village on the edge of Port Meadow and the canal.

The Trout Inn at Godstow, the ruins of Godstow Abbey and the northern access to Port Meadow make it a favourite riverside pub-walk destination.

- [**The Trout Inn** At Godstow Bridge, and the reason most people come.](<https://above.guide/oxford/things-to-do/trout-inn-wolvercote>)
- [**Port Meadow** Walk back into the city across the meadow rather than by road.](<https://above.guide/oxford/things-to-do/port-meadow>)
- [**The Perch** The other thatched riverside pub, across the meadow at Binsey.](<https://above.guide/oxford/things-to-do/the-perch-binsey>)

A working draft. Opening hours, prices and current access for anything in these areas are delegated to each venue's official site — confirm before you go. Area character and geography are drawn from the Above Guide knowledge base.
