Above Guide / What the films actually used

## Oxford’s Potter locations,
*and the one everybody gets wrong.*

Oxford appears in the Harry Potter films more than any city outside a studio backlot, and almost every guide to it repeats at least one claim the buildings themselves do not make. These are the locations Oxford can actually evidence — and the famous one it cannot.

### The short answer

**Three Oxford sites are genuinely bound up with the films: New College, the Bodleian, and Christ Church — but not the part of Christ Church you are thinking of.**

The confusion is worth understanding before you plan a day around it. Oxford supplied real interiors for some scenes and the visual language for others, and the second kind gets described as the first almost everywhere you look.

### What the buildings themselves claim

![New College cloisters, Oxford](<https://above.guide/oxford/_guide/images/colleges/new-college.webp>)

Confirmed New College — cloisters and courtyard

Used as filming locations in **Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire**. This is the least equivocal of the three: the cloisters are recorded as a filming location in the college’s own account, and they are still recognisably the space on screen. They are also, quietly, the best of the three to stand in.

![The Divinity School, Bodleian Library, Oxford](<https://above.guide/oxford/_guide/images/experiences/bodleian-library-tour.webp>)

Confirmed The Bodleian — Divinity School and Duke Humfrey’s Library

Several of the Bodleian’s medieval rooms were used as Hogwarts locations. The Divinity School’s vaulting and Duke Humfrey’s reading room are the two that visitors recognise, and both can be seen — the Divinity School directly, Duke Humfrey’s on the guided tour that goes inside.

![Christ Church, Oxford](<https://above.guide/oxford/_guide/images/colleges/christ-church.webp>)

Confirmed Christ Church — the staircase

The college’s own words are that the Hall staircase “may be familiar, having been used in a number of film and television projects including *Lewis* and *Harry Potter*”. **The staircase is the claim Christ Church makes, and it makes it plainly.**

These are the three the buildings evidence themselves. Where a claim below rests on nothing more than repetition, this guide says so instead of tidying it away.

### The Great Hall, and why we will not settle it

This is the most-asked question about Christ Church and the most confidently mis-answered, in **both** directions.

**Christ Church says nothing about the Great Hall and Harry Potter.** The staircase sentence above is the only reference on the college’s domain; the Great Hall section of the same page does not mention the films at all.

**The popular correction is no better sourced than the myth.** The line you will read everywhere — that the Hall was the *inspiration* for a set built at Leavesden rather than a filming location — is not stated by the college either. It is a plausible account that has been repeated until it reads like a fact.

Unproven Was the Great Hall a filming location?

**We do not assert it either way, and we will not.** Neither the claim nor its popular correction can be traced to the college. Choosing between two unsourced answers because one of them reads better is how the original myth started.

You can still eat under that hammerbeam roof and it is still magnificent. It simply is not the thing the internet says it is, and nobody can currently prove what it is instead.

### Walking it in one afternoon

The three sites sit within about ten minutes of each other, which makes this one of the easier themed walks in the city.

![Christ Church, Oxford](<https://above.guide/oxford/_guide/images/colleges/christ-church.webp>)

Start — Christ Church

Largest and busiest, and the one worth reaching first. The staircase is on the way into the Hall, so you pass the genuine location on your way to the contested one.

![The Divinity School, Bodleian Library](<https://above.guide/oxford/_guide/images/experiences/bodleian-library-tour.webp>)

Then — the Bodleian

Eight minutes north. The Divinity School is the vaulted room on the ground floor; Duke Humfrey’s is reached on the tour that goes inside rather than the one that stops in the quadrangle.

![New College cloisters, Oxford](<https://above.guide/oxford/_guide/images/colleges/new-college.webp>)

Finish — New College

Five minutes east, along New College Lane and under the Bridge of Sighs. The cloisters are the quietest of the three and the most rewarding to linger in.

Colleges admit visitors on their own terms and their access changes with term, services and events. None of the three is guaranteed on any given day.

Ten minutes apart

### The three, on the map

Christ Church, the Bodleian, New College — the whole route is about twenty minutes on foot, and the two confirmed locations bookend it.

**Drawing route** The itinerary still works without the map.

Common questions

Was the Hogwarts Great Hall filmed at Christ Church?

We cannot establish it either way, and neither can anyone else citing the college. Christ Church claims **the staircase** — its words are that the Hall staircase “may be familiar, having been used in a number of film and television projects including *Lewis* and *Harry Potter*”. It says nothing about the Great Hall. The widely repeated correction, that the Hall inspired a set built at Leavesden, is equally unsourced. **This guide asserts neither.**

Which Oxford locations were definitely used in the Harry Potter films?

Three. **New College’s cloisters and courtyard** appear in *Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire*. **The Bodleian’s medieval rooms** — the Divinity School and Duke Humfrey’s Library among them — were used as Hogwarts locations. **Christ Church’s Hall staircase** is claimed by the college itself. Everything beyond those three is either studio work or repetition.

Can you visit all three in one day?

Yes, comfortably — they are within about ten minutes’ walk of one another in central Oxford. The constraint is access rather than distance: all three are working institutions that admit visitors around term, services and events, so any one of them can be closed on a given day.

Is there a Harry Potter tour of Oxford?

Several operators run one. Before booking any Oxford tour, check whether it goes **inside** the buildings or only stops outside them — two tours with near-identical names differ on exactly that point, which is covered on our corrections page.

The verdict

**Oxford’s real contribution to the films is larger than the one thing everyone repeats.** New College’s cloisters and the Bodleian’s medieval rooms are both evidenced and both better to stand in than the Hall everyone queues for. As for the Great Hall: Christ Church claims the staircase and nothing more, the popular correction is no better sourced than the myth it corrects, and **where we cannot establish something, this guide says so rather than picking the version that reads well.**
