Above Guide / A full day, nothing spent

## A brilliant day in Oxford can cost nothing.

Oxford has a reputation for charging for everything. In fact its major museums and collections are free, the finest streets cost nothing to walk, and the single most atmospheric hour of the day is a church service anyone can attend.

The claim

### Oxford’s best free places

Oxford has a reputation for charging for everything, and for the colleges that is largely fair. But the museums are free, the finest streets cost nothing to walk, the meadow and the common are open ground, and the most atmospheric hour of the day is a service anyone may attend.

### 13 genuinely free stops

Every card states exactly what is free. Where something inside charges, we say so before you arrive.

[![Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford](<https://above.guide/oxford/_guide/images/experiences/pitt-rivers-museum.webp>)

Free

#### Pitt Rivers Museum

Arranged by type rather than by culture, in near-darkness, in dense Victorian cases. Unlike any other museum in Britain, and the one people remember for years.

 1–2 hours](<https://above.guide/oxford/things-to-do/pitt-rivers-museum>)

[![Oxford University Museum of Natural History, Oxford](<https://above.guide/oxford/_guide/images/experiences/museum-natural-history.webp>)

Free

#### Oxford University Museum of Natural History

A soaring neo-Gothic court of iron and glass, full of skeletons — and the way through to the Pitt Rivers, which is entered through its back wall.

 1 hour](<https://above.guide/oxford/things-to-do/museum-natural-history>)

[![The Ashmolean Museum, Oxford](<https://above.guide/oxford/_guide/images/experiences/ashmolean-museum.webp>)

Free general admission

#### The Ashmolean Museum

Britain’s first public museum, and a serious collection by any standard. Special exhibitions may charge separately; the permanent collections are the free part.

 2 hours](<https://above.guide/oxford/things-to-do/ashmolean-museum>)

[![The Weston Library, Oxford](<https://above.guide/oxford/_guide/images/experiences/weston-library.webp>)

Free entry to Blackwell Hall

#### The Weston Library

The Bodleian’s public room, and the piece of it anyone can walk into. Its exhibitions draw on one of the great libraries in the world.

 30 minutes](<https://above.guide/oxford/things-to-do/weston-library>)

[![Bate Collection of Musical Instruments, Oxford](<https://above.guide/oxford/_guide/images/experiences/bate-collection-oxford.webp>)

Free to visit

#### Bate Collection of Musical Instruments

One of the world’s significant collections of European orchestral and historic instruments, now displayed inside the Schwarzman Centre. Confirm the collection’s current visiting arrangements before setting out.

 45–60 minutes](<https://above.guide/oxford/things-to-do/bate-collection-oxford>)

[![Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities, Oxford](<https://above.guide/oxford/_guide/images/experiences/schwarzman-centre-oxford.webp>)

Free public areas

#### Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities

The University’s new humanities centre in the Radcliffe Observatory Quarter. Its ground floor, public spaces and exhibitions provide a free destination; individual performances may have their own ticketing.

 45–60 minutes](<https://above.guide/oxford/things-to-do/schwarzman-centre-oxford>)

[![The Radcliffe Camera, Oxford](<https://above.guide/oxford/_guide/images/experiences/radcliffe-camera.webp>)

Radcliffe Square is free

#### The Radcliffe Camera

The most photographed building in Oxford, standing in open ground you can walk across at any hour. Inside is a different matter — there is no drop-in access, and only one tour goes in.

 15 minutes](<https://above.guide/oxford/things-to-do/radcliffe-camera>)

[![The Bridge of Sighs, Oxford](<https://above.guide/oxford/_guide/images/experiences/bridge-of-sighs.webp>)

Free — the exterior is public

#### The Bridge of Sighs

Hertford’s bridge over New College Lane, and the lane beneath it is a public right of way. Walk under it rather than photographing it from the corner like everyone else.

 10 minutes](<https://above.guide/oxford/things-to-do/bridge-of-sighs>)

[![Oxford Covered Market, Oxford](<https://above.guide/oxford/_guide/images/experiences/oxford-covered-market.webp>)

Free to enter

#### Oxford Covered Market

Trading since the eighteenth century, and free to walk through. It is also the cheapest food in central Oxford if you decide to buy.

 30 minutes](<https://above.guide/oxford/things-to-do/oxford-covered-market>)

[![University Church of St Mary the Virgin, Oxford](<https://above.guide/oxford/_guide/images/experiences/university-church-tower.webp>)

The church is free to enter

#### University Church of St Mary the Virgin

St Mary’s sits on Radcliffe Square and costs nothing to walk into. The tower climb is the paid part — and it is the view most people are actually after.

 20 minutes](<https://above.guide/oxford/things-to-do/university-church-tower>)

[![Christ Church Meadow, Oxford](<https://above.guide/oxford/_guide/images/experiences/christ-church-meadow.webp>)

Free to enter

#### Christ Church Meadow

Water meadow between two rivers, five minutes from the centre, with the college behind you. Separate from the college visit and on entirely different hours.

 45 minutes](<https://above.guide/oxford/things-to-do/christ-church-meadow>)

[![University Parks, Oxford](<https://above.guide/oxford/_guide/images/experiences/university-parks.webp>)

Free to enter

#### University Parks

Seventy acres, and the walk through to the Cherwell. The quiet route between the museums and the river.

 45 minutes](<https://above.guide/oxford/things-to-do/university-parks>)

[![Port Meadow, Oxford](<https://above.guide/oxford/_guide/images/experiences/port-meadow.webp>)

Free — open common land

#### Port Meadow

Grazed continuously for over a thousand years and never ploughed. No gates, no hours, and the best sunset in Oxford.

 1–2 hours](<https://above.guide/oxford/things-to-do/port-meadow>)

A day that costs nothing

### One route. Five easy decisions.

Use this as a shape, not a timetable. Stay longer when somewhere earns it.

1. 01 **Morning**

Natural History Museum, then straight through into the Pitt Rivers. Two hours, easily three.
2. 02 **Midday**

Walk down Parks Road to Radcliffe Square. Brasenose Lane, Catte Street, the Bridge of Sighs.
3. 03 **Lunch**

The Covered Market — free to walk through, and the cheapest food in central Oxford if you are buying.
4. 04 **Afternoon**

The Ashmolean, or Christ Church Meadow if the weather is behaving.
5. 05 **Late afternoon**

Evensong, if it is term. Free, open to anyone, and the best hour of the day.

Deliberately not free

### So you can decide where the money goes.

Going inside most colleges, climbing a tower for the view, punting and the Botanic Garden all charge. **None of them is necessary to a good day here**, and the free version of Oxford is not a lesser one.

If you spend on exactly one thing, spend it on getting inside a college — that is the experience the free day genuinely lacks.

[Understand college access](<https://above.guide/oxford/colleges-you-can-visit>)

The verdict

**A day in Oxford spending nothing is not a compromise.** Three first-rank free museums, the best streets in the city, ancient common land and a sung service in a college chapel is a fuller day than most paid itineraries manage.

Keep exploring

### Spend time, not necessarily money.
