**Founded 1869.** Founded in 1869 as Cambridge's non-collegiate institution for able students who could not afford college membership, it was known successively as Fitzwilliam Hall and Fitzwilliam House before moving to Huntingdon Road in 1963 and becoming an independent college by Royal Charter in 1966.

Denys Lasdun's modernist brick ranges of the early 1960s form the core of the college, later joined by Richard MacCormac's lantern-like chapel of 1991, and the whole site wraps around The Grove, a Regency house standing in mature gardens.
